MotW for March 26 - C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog/It Happened In Your Neighbourhood)

A Belgian-made black comedy in the style of a documentary, C'est arrivé près de chez vous or Man Bites Dog/It Happened In Your Neighbourhood follows the exploits of a serial killer as he explains his methods and philosophy. Brutal, unflinching, funny and violent. It was suggested that club members not watch it just before going to bed...

MotW for March 19 - The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover

No, this was not a 4-film bonanza, but rather the rather very long name of a very complicated movie. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover was controversial when it was released in 1989, due to its sexual and violent content. The plot can seem a little convoluted, but as an example of Formalism in Cinema it is wonderful.

MotW for March 12 - The Hudsucker Proxy

Perhaps one of the lesser known of the Coen Brother's filmography, The Hudsucker Proxy is a pre-Fargo goofy comedy co-written by Sam Raimi. A great pick-me-up movie for anyone, one of Tim Robbins' most interesting performances.
"You know, for kids!"

MotW for March 5 - Lost In Translation

(From the wiki* article) Lost In Translation is a film which "explores themes of loneliness, alientation, insomnia, existential ennui, and culture shock". Given that in this day and age these are problems experienced by most at one time or another it's easy to see why this dramedy has such universal appeal.

MotW for February 26 - The Warriors

Despite being the clear winner for Week 16, The Warriors was met with a peak amount of disinterest from the group. This mod stll hasn't had a chance to watch it, as the Livestream watch that week was cancelled. So no mini-review, but here is all the info just the same:

MotW for February 19 - Primer

15 weeks, 15 submissions, 15 votes and finally: Primer won!

A low budget success story is captivating enough, but Primer's convoluted and deeply layered plot really gets into your head. To say that it requires multiple viewings is all the help you'll find here.

MotW for February 12 - Dark City

Back to the Humanity and Sense Of Self-defining drama this week, with Alex Proyas' highly appropriately named Dark City. Since its 1998 release it has developed quite the (justifiable) cult following. Just make sure to watch the director's cut to avoid the beginning monologue (did no one learn from Blade Runner?).

MotW for February 5 - Zombieland

A light-hearted change from our usual dramatic fare. Zombieland, if you somehow haven't heard of it, is an hilarious adventure- dramedy set in a world overrun with the living dead. With just your wits (and maybe a shotgun) how long could you survive in Zombieland?

MotW for Jan 29 - Moon

Written with its star Sam Rockwell specifically in mind, Moon is an independent film with a blockbuster feel. Best viewed as a drama rather than science fiction, this movie is yet another which questions identity and humanity, and does it very, very well.

MotW for Jan 22 - Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

"You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!"
A brilliant satire, ahead of its time, and recognized as being "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb takes on the Nuclear War scare. There is no question that this offering by Kubrick is one of his best.

MotW for Jan 8 - Blue Velvet

We finally got to Lynch, with this week's choice of Blue Velvet. From the wiki article, Blue Velvet "is noted for re-launching Dennis Hopper's career and providing Isabella Rossellini a dramatic outlet beyond work as a fashion model and a cosmetics spokeswoman for which she was formerly known." A drama examining the dark heart that can exist in any idyllic town, filmed in a dreamy style that came to be known as Lynch's trademark.

MotW for Jan 1 - Synecdoche, New York

Our first MotW of the new year, and the second in a row by Charlie Kaufman. Synecdoche, New York was Robert Ebert's choice for best movie of the decade and has been the subject of much divisive discussion. A tragicomedy set in NY, Synecdoche, New York stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a playwright attempting to build the greatest piece of work of his life, and at the same time find meaning in his existence.

M(s)otW for Dec. 25 - Adaptation/Die Hard

In light of the Christmas season we elected to have two films for this week.

Regular MotW: Adaptation - Written by and starring Charlie Kaufman (as played by Nic Cage), Adaptation is a deconstruction of story and narrative. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, it will challenge your expectations.

Holiday themed MotW: Die Hard - There were many good contenders, but considering our demographic it was likely from the start that Die Hard would win.

MotW for Dec. 18 - Network

"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

Is that line familiar? It's seeped into our popular culture as a result of this MotW - Network. A 1976 classic satire that analyzes The Media and how it tries own our hearts and minds. The message it gives is still relevant today.
